Chum

The calico tiger of late fall — last fish of the season, biggest roe.

Quick IDWhite mouth/gums; no spots; calico bars spawning; white anal-fin tip; dog teeth.

The fish

Chum are the second-largest Pacific salmon and the last to spawn each year, which makes them the fish that extends the river season after everything else is done. Spawning chum are among the most striking fish that swim — bold vertical calico bars of green, purple and red — and the males grow the enlarged canine "dog teeth" that give them the name "dog salmon." Their roe is the largest and most prized of any salmon. Underrated as a sport fish, a fresh chum on light tackle is a genuinely strong, dogged fight.

How to identify

spawning chum showing purple-green calico bars and dog teeth
  • White mouth with white gums, and no spots — an ocean-bright chum can resemble a sockeye, but the chum has a white tip on the anal fin, a wide tail base, and a large pupil.
  • Spawning fish are unmistakable: calico bars of purple, green and dull red down the flanks, with a fierce hooked, toothy kype in males.

Lifecycle & migration

Like pinks, chum head to sea soon after emergence rather than rearing in freshwater, and return as the final act of the salmon year.

Run timing & conditions (BC)

  • October–December, the last major run of the season.
  • Best conditions: chum hold in the lower and middle river and respond famously to chartreuse, pink and purple. Fresh, cooler late-fall flows are prime.

Best BeadnFloat beads

  • Low & clear: 12mm (12–14mm), pale pink / natural — a subtler bead, but keep it sizeable.
  • Green & dropping (prime): 16mm (14–16mm), chartreuse / purple / pink — lean into the colours chum love.
  • High & coloured: 19mm, chartreuse / hot pink / purple — big and bright for low visibility.
  • Blown out: 19mm, chartreuse / purple — below a clear trib only.
